2017-2018 BRAZILIAN MEN’S SUPERLIGA

Our last two Superliga recaps chronicled Minas‘ ascension in the standings against its much tougher opponents. This climb was halted this weekend by Taubaté, who broke Minas‘ 4 game winning streak by handing it a 3-1 loss (23/25 31/29 15/25 16/25) behind Marko Ivovic‘s 18 points on 12/17 (71%) hitting, including 5 aces and 1 block. Davy Silva had 17 points in the losing effort. Taubaté hit 59% from the field as a team while holding Minas to a 49% performance. Had Minas won the game, it would overtake Taubaté in the standings and be one of the competition’s 4 seeds. With the loss, 5 points now separate Minas from home court advantage seeding territory.

Team of the Week: Maringá

Maringá is used to leading Superliga in attendance year after year. That, however, has not translated into wins for the team. This season, it took 17 rounds for the squad to win its first game of the season, in which most certainly will be its relegation farewell from first division volleyball. However, whenever a team finds motivation out of nowhere to continue fighting, it must be celebrated. And this Maringá did,  fighting until the end against Ponta Grossa to come out with a much awaited 3-2 win.

Player of the Week: Riad Ribeiro

The former national teamer was almost perfect this week, as he converted 9 out of his 10 spike attempts. He also added 4 aces and 1 block to his stat-sheet to cap up his 15 point effort, which paced Corinthians in its win against rivals Campinas. You won’t see a performance much better than this anywhere else.
