Superliga’s 10th round was shorter than usual, with Cruzeiro having played its game with SESI ahead of schedule due to its participation in the 2017 FIVB Club World Championship. In this round, teams readied their final push for favorable Brazilian Cup seeding, as Superliga’s standings by the end of its 11th round will decide the matchups. Below, you’ll find recaps from all of the round’s action:
- Montes Claros Vôlei beat Copel Telecom/Maringá 3-0 (23/25, 19/25, 23/25) behind Alexander Marczewski 15 points. Alisson Bastos had 15 points in the losing effort. Montes Claros was much more efficient on attacks than Maringá, hitting 55% from the field against Maringá’s 41% performance.
- Lebes/Canoas beat JF Vôlei 3-1 (25/17, 25/20, 25/27, 25/23) behind Aboubacar Neto‘s 29 points, including five blocks and three aces. Leonardo Nascimento had 31 points in the losing effort. Canoas was gifted 28 points from errors by JF, while also outblocking them 17 to 3 in the game.
- Sesc/RJ beat Renata Vôlei/Campinas 3-1 (13/25, 25/23, 25/23, 25/23) behind João Ferreira‘s 18 points on 15/24 (63%) hitting. Leandro Vissoto had 28 points in the losing effort. SESC‘s victory was impressive when we consider the fact that as a team, it was less efficient from the field and was outblocked by Campinas, while also contributing 34 points from errors to its opponent.
- EMS Funvic/Taubaté beat Corinthians/Guarulhos 3-0 (17/25, 23/25, 22/25) behind Wallace Souza‘s 14 points. Sidnei Santos (Sidão) had 12 points in the losing effort. Corinthians had a lot of difficulty with its passing game, performing at a mediocre 18% clip.
- Minas Tênis Clube beat Ponta Grossa/Caramuru in a very tight 3-0 (32/30, 25/21, 26/24) game behind Flavio Gualberto’s 19 points on 11/14 (79%) hitting, including seven blocks. Leonardo Pinheiro had 15 points in the losing effort. Minas outblocked Ponta Grossa 13 to 5 in the game, largely thanks to Gualberto’s fantastic play at the net.
- Finally, on Oct. 26 Sada/Cruzeiro beat SESI/SP 3-1 (26/24, 25/23, 21/25, 25/21) behind Yoandy Leal‘s 15 points. Douglas Souza had 14 points in the losing effort. The game was very sloppy, with both teams combining for 49 service errors (Cruzeiro with 26, Sesi with 23).
Team of the Week: Lebes/Canoas
Superliga’s leader in its first few rounds, Canoas returned back to earth later in the competition, losing a few straight games and falling from playoff contention. It bounced back in this round with its relatively easy win against JF Vôlei, which guaranteed it a nice hold of the seventh place in the standings; It sports a 5-5 record, and is three points ahead of eighth place Campinas, a team with a far higher financial investment. It is safe to say Canoas is overachieving this season.
Player of the Week: Flavio Gualberto
Minas‘ Flavio Gualberto outblocked Ponta Grossa by himself 7-5 during their encounter this round. Not only this, but Minas‘ middle blocker is currently leading Superliga in blocks per set at a 0.76 clip and is second in total blocks. His superb efficiency from the attack line also demanded attention this time around, as he hit 11/14 on his way to 19 points. He is currently Superliga’s third most efficient attacker, hitting at a 63% clip.
