Lebron James’ NBA Finals streak has a pretty good challenger: Cruzeiro‘s 39-year-old Sérgio Nogueira’s Superliga finals streak is mighty impressive. This weekend, he will participate in his 15th finals appearance, looking to win his 9th title in the competition. He jokingly talked about his feat with Globo.com:
“History doesn’t lie, I’ve won a lot of titles. I’ve started young in Minas, winning a lot with the team, and then I played in other victorious projects as well, but people don’t seem to remember that. Today, of course, I am mostly recognized as being part of Cruzeiro‘s super-team, who has won everything in the last 8 years. The most important part is not telling your secrets.
Joking aside, the secret for a team like Cruzeiro to reach so many finals is to keep a strong base. Our team was created in 2010, and since then has only replaced a few pieces. Our athletes have always been very serious about winning. Now, everyone is thirsty for another title.”
While Sérgio’s domestic career is something for the record books, he has not enjoyed the same prestige with Brazil’s national team, being called up only a few times, mostly due to relationship issues with the team’s staff. Will he have one last chance with the team now that Renan Dal Zotto has replaced Bernadinho as the team’s head coach?
