JF Vôlei is a young, small-market Brazilian team. After a very successful season last year, in which it finished its campaign in Superliga’s 7th place, advancing to the playoffs, this year it finished its season ranked dead last in the standings and was relegated from Brazil’s top tier competition.
However, not everything is as it seems, as JF’s General Manager, Maurício Bara, recently revealed. According to him, there is conundrum in Brazilian volleyball: when things are going great in the court, the team is doing horribly financially, and when everything is going horrible in the hardwood, financially the team is doing great. Here is what he had to say about the last two seasons in an interview given to Globo.com:
“We had a different situation last year. We were able to organize a very competitive roster, which sadly left us with a lot of debt. We though that by investing in a strong team, we would have a return to our investment, which didn’t happen. So even though the competition results were great, out of the court we were having a real difficult time. This season we dried up all our expenses, signed only two players, and promoted our assistant coach to head coach. The result inside the court was horrible, but we were able to even our finances out and to pay our debts. So you see that things get unbalanced, when you are doing good inside the court, you are doing bad outside of it and vice versa. So that is what we will focus on fixing for our next seasons.”
