2017-2018 BRAZILIAN MEN’S SUPERLIGA

10 points separate Ponta Grossa from Corinthians in this season’s Superliga’s standings. While the latter is a lock for the playoffs, the first is fighting to keep itself in Superliga’s elite division. This disparity did not matter this week though, as Ponta Grossa/Caramuru beat Corinthians/Guarulhos 3-1 (20/25 27/25 22/25 23/25) behind Leonardo Pinheiro‘s 23 points. Rogerio Nogueira had 14 points in the losing effort. Ponta Grossa was granted 41 points from errors.

Below are the results from all of the round’s games:

  • Sesi/SP beat Vôlei Renata/Campinas 3-0 (25/20 25/16 25/23) behind Alan Souza‘ 18 points. Leandro Vissotto had 20 points in the losing effort. Sesi had 12 aces in the game and hit 66% as a team.
  • Copel Telecom/Maringá beat Lebes/Canoas 3-1 (25/22 31/29 20/25 25/23) behind Alisson Bastos 21 points on 19/30 (63%) hitting. Matheus Cunda had 15 points in the losing effort. Canoas out-blocked Maringá 16 to 5 and hit for a better percentage, but ended up losing the game due to its 31 to 22 error disadvantage.
  • Sada/Cruzero beat Minas Tênis Clube 3-2 (25/19 22/25 25/22 23/25 15/13) behind Yoandy Leal‘s 24 points on 21/27 (78%) hitting. Henrique Honorato had 18 points in the losing effort. Cruzeiro ht 64% from the field as a team.
  • Ems Funvic/Taubaté beat Montes Claro Vôlei 3-0 (25/20 25/16 25/22) behind Wallace Souza‘s 13 points. Luan Mota had 10 points in the losing effort. Taubaté outhit Montes Claros 56% to 41%.
  • Sesc/RJ beat JF Vôlei 3-2 (24/26 21/25 25/21 25/20 15/12) behind João Ferreira‘s 20 points. Emerson Rodriguez had 21 points in the losing effort. Sesc was granted 41 points from errors.

Team of the Week: Ponta Grossa/Caramuru

Ponta Grossa was relegated last season and was only able to keep itself in Superliga after winning its repeschage tournament. This years things were different though, as the team has been actually fairly competitive, like this week, beating a much better squad. While it probably won’t make the playoffs, it is almost a sure lock to avoid relegation this season.

Player of the Week: Yoandy Leal

24 points on 21/27 (78%) hitting, including 3 aces. That is the kind of stat-line that will make Leal one of this off-season’s hottest commodities. Expect him to be signed to one of the highest paychecks of the sport.
