The Netherlands shocked the world again. Just one day after handing current Olympic champions and WCH runner ups Brazil, the Dutch squad came back from behind 0-2 after subbing out a few of its players to hand the star-studded French team a breath-taking tie-break loss. Meanwhile, the Egyptian team was finally able to break a very uncomfortable streak. Here is the day’s recap:
The Netherlands Defeated France 3-2 (23-25, 19-25, 25-21, 25-23, 15-13)
- The Netherlands moves to 3-1 while France moves to 2-2
- Attendance: 2050
- P2 Stats-Sheet
Dutch captain Nimir Abdel-Aziz started the game on fire, scoring 2 straight aces and allowing the Dutch team to open up an 8-3 lead. The team quickly saw its lead balloon up to 10-3, as it scored 4 service points in that short game span. The Dutch team continued to dominated and had a 22-19 lead, but were unable to close the set, as the French squad went on a 6-1 run. The Dutch squad felt the blow after losing the first set in absurd fashion, and gifted the French with an easy second set win. However, The Netherlands was determined to fight back and not let the game become a typical easy 3-0 win for the French team, and powered its way to a comfortable 3rd set win. It then gritted and gutted its way to a 4th and 5th victory to close the game. Aziz led the way with 31 points, while Stephen Boyer had 21 in the losing effort. The French squad was once again its starting middle-blocker Kevin Le Roux, who is rehabbing a thigh injury.
Post match reactions are yet to be released by the FIVB.

Egypt has finally broken off its slump that saw it lose its last 12 matches at its WCH history, a streak that goes back to 2010. It wasn’t easy, though, as China really gave the African team a run for its money during the whole game, contending for every point. Ahmed Abdelhay led the way with 21 points while Chuan Jiang had 28 points in the losing effort.
Here are the post match reactions:
Egypt’s coach Moselhy Ibrahim: “I am very happy that we have our first win in the tournament, of course. We took three points from this match and this is giving us hope for tomorrow. The players today were very concentrated and I hope tomorrow they will have the same concentration and the same winning attitude. I want to thank them for the effort today. I think the match tomorrow will be very difficult. The Netherlands played a very good match against Brazil and they have a very good atmosphere in the team. I hope we will have a good reception to be able to respond to them properly.”
Egypt’s Hisham Ewais: “It is our first win and I think this is just the beginning. We have another match tomorrow and this will be the most important game for us at this championship. We were focused today and we won. I think if we remain focused we will be able to win again. We lost our three matches by 3-0, so this victory give us some confidence.”
China’s coach Raul Lozano: “I think we do not have the experience to play in situations of advantage or, in other words, how to to win sets whe we are ahead. We wasted a lot of chances today. If you do not see the chance, the other team sees it. I want to congratulate Egypt, they were mentally stronger than us.”
Egypt 🇪🇬 completed an important victory in Pool B in Ruse after beating China 🇨🇳 in four sets. Historical afternoon for the Africans with Ahmed Abdelhay as top scorer with 23 tallies.
