2017 FIVB VOLLEYBALL WORLD GRAND PRIX – GROUP 1

  • Group 1, Pool G1
  • July 7th – August 6th
  • Hong Kong, China
  • FIVB World Grand Prix Round 1, Week 3
  • Schedule/Results

Coming into the week Pool G1 was the only one with three teams in the top six, and two of them meet up in their first match: China and Japan.

At 4-2, China is slightly ahead of Japan in the standings behind one extra point. It will be interesting to see if captain Zhu Ting plays the whole match, as she did vs. USA last week. Ting had been resting in some sets or coming on as a substitution after a daunting club schedule, but has been a huge difference for China when in the game. A win would push China into a good spot as they look to finish in the top six for the sixth straight year.

Japan is enjoying its best start since 2013 when they won their first six matches. They only trail China by a point, as both teams are 4-2. They’ll be looking to get back into the final six, where they resided three straight seasons before missing it in 2016.

The reigning Olympic champions have won their last five meetings with Japan, with this version of the Asian derby coming at an important time to final six qualification at the 2017 FIVB World Grand Prix.
