Group 1 action on day 1 of the 2017 FIVB World League was full of twists as teams regroup to start a new Olympic cycle and learn more about what their new-look rosters bring them toward Tokyo.
Two of the three Olympic medalists, champions Brazil and 3rd-place finishers the United States, lost their openers on Friday. In both cases, however, the losses were not total surprises.
Brazil fell to a veteran Poland squad as they work to get their feet under them. The Brazilians relied on senior international rookies as 2 of their 3 leading scorers in the match, and the team gave away 30 points on errors. Expect them to improve as the tournament wears on as they become more accustomed to their new roster and new coach, Renan dal Zotto.
The Americans, meanwhile, lost in Serbia to Serbia – a team that won last year’s World League and has a history of rising to this particular challenge. They won last year’s World League without even qualifying for the Olympics, and a year earlier took silver in the World League in spite of coming in just 9th in the European Championships that year.
Aside from those outcomes, there was little in the way of true surprises on the day. Canada won a tough match against Belgium that was the most thrilling final of the day, while Russia, France, and Italy each dominated in 3-0 sweeps over Argentina, Bulgaria, and Iran, respectively.
