2017-2018 BRAZILIAN MEN’S SUPERLIGA

Superliga Finals Game 1 was a true battle. Both teams gifted fans with hard fought volleyball match that had long rallies and frequent lead changes. At the end, Sada/Cruzeiro came out victorious by beating Sesi-SP 3-2 (23/25 27/25 24/26 25/22 12/15) behind Yoandy Leal‘s and Evandro Guerra‘s 21 points each. Luiz Fonteles had 16 points in the losing effort. Despite committing 42 errors as team in the match, Cruzeiro was able to hold Sesi to a 36% hitting effort, which made all the difference in the end.

The names of the game for Cruzeiro was its foreign “Fantastic Four” of setter Nicolas Uriarte, outside hitter Yoandy Leal, middle blocker RobertLandy Simon, and coach Marcelo Mendez. Uriarte played perhaps his best game with Cruzeiro’s jersey, perfectly distributing the offense led by Leal and Simon. Meanwhile, Mendez made key substitutions throughout the game to spark offensive runs and defensive stops. He knows, however, that more needs to be done if the team is to win the title next weekend:

“It was a very hard game. Sesi was excellent in its serving. We started poorly, but as time went on, we got better, balancing it out at the service end, and blocking better. We are happy, but we still have to fix a few things for next game, specially when it comes to serving and attacking.”

Sesi’s Murilo Endres couldn’t help but to leave the court very frustrated:

“We lacked attention. All sets were decided at the end, with very high scores for either team. We made mistakes on important balls that will haunt us from now on when we watch the game video. But, that’s that. The team as a whole needs to improve. It does not matter if one individual player has a good game, if the team loses. We need to get that inside our heads and try to win the next game to have a chance to win the title at the Golden Set.”

Game 2 will be next Sunday. Cruzeiro needs a simple win to guarantee its 6th Superliga title at home, while Sesi needs to win the match to take the series into its Golden Set
