Superliga’s top two seeds, Cruzeiro and Sesc, got off to a rough semifinals start, losing their games to Taubaté and Sesi, respectively. Can Taubaté, even without its most important player in Ricardo Lucarelli, and Sesi pull of these major upsets ? Both teams have star studded rosters, led by Olympic gold medalists. They will face very tough competition, but have already given the successful first step. Games 2 will be played this Tuesday.
Recaps
- EMS Funvic/Taubaté surprised Sada/Cruzeiro with a 3-1 win (25/23 22/25 17/25 27/29) behind Wallace Souza‘s 22 points on 20/33 hitting (61%). Evandro Guerra had 21 points in the losing effort. Cruzeiro committed an abysmal 47 errors in the game, while Taubaté only had 28 mistakes. This was the first time ever that Taubaté was able to get an away win at Cruzeiro. Wallace commented on the win:
“Today, their service game did not work, which made a big difference. They were forced to just give us free balls, which we used to our advantage. Obviously, this win motivates us, but we know the series is wide open. A win away from home is a big step for the team, but we have to keep our feet on the ground because there is a lot of games left. They did not have their best game, but we have to respect them, and Tuesday we have another battle. We’ll try to play even better to come out with another win.”
- Sesi/SP beat Sesc/RJ 3-1 (25/20 30/32 22/25 25/19 15/11) behind Alan Souza‘s 29 points on 27/41 (67%) hitting. Maurício Borges had 25 points in the losing effort. Sesi hit 62% as a team for the game. Alan commented on his superb play:
“This is my first Superliga as a starter. Sesi gave me this opportunity, I’m very happy and I think I’m enjoying it well. We won the three games we played against them this season, but that does not mean anything. Today our tiebreak win was decided only the end. We have to see what we did right, what we did worong, and work a lot because Tuesday we’ll have another battle.”
