The FIVB World Grand Prix Group 1 finals are set to begin on Wednesday, August 2 in Nanjing, China. The top six teams from the preliminary rounds will square off for their shot at the Grand Prix title.
Over the past nine seasons, Brazil and the USA have dominated the fields by winning five and four titles, respectively. This season, Serbia has emerged as a front runner in the competitions with the help of Brankica Mihajlovic who put down 153 points in the preliminary rounds on 136 kills, 11 blocks and six aces.
Following preliminary play, the six teams that advanced to the finals in China are (in order of rank) Serbia, USA, Brazil, the Netherlands, Italy and China. In the rankings, China technically finished in seventh place behind Japan, but as the host country of the event, they earned an automatic spot in the finals.
Of the teams in the finals, there have been a few teams that have already squared off against each other in the opening rounds of the competition. Team USA took on and defeated Italy in the first week of the Grand Prix, though lost to them in the second week and Brazil rolled through the Netherlands in the final week of play. After that, the teams are facing new competitors in the opening days of the Final Six.
