The second week of the FIVB World League has concluded win no teams turning up undefeated throughout the competition.
Germany remains on top of the leader board with 15 points, and a much higher point ratio than any other teams in the tournament. The German team’s first loss of the World League came on the first day of round two to Austria.
Up next for the Group 3 participants are the semifinals and finals next weekend, as they finish up play a week earlier than the other two groups in the World League.
Pool D3
Day One
- Venezuela def. Greece 3-0, (25-20, 29-27, 25-16)
Venezuela started their second round fight strong with a straight set victory over Greece.
Emerson Alexander Rodriguez Gonzalez led the Venezuelan side with 12 points while Greece’s Rafail Koumentakis put down a match-best 15 points in the loss.
- Estonia def. Qatar 3-0, (25-16, 25-15, 25-20)
Estonia flew past Qatar in three sets, for an easy opening match of the second round. Strong attacks and a solid block led the Estonian team to victory.
Rober Taht led Estonia to victory with 17 points while Qatar’s Renan Ribeiro added seven in the loss.
Day Two
- Qatar def. Greece 3-0, (25-23, 25-21, 29-27)
Qatar rolled through Greece in a tough three-set match, with none of the sets coming easy for the Qatar side.
Ilija Ivoic led Qatar with 16 points while Rafail Koumentakis put down 14 points in the losing effor.
- Estonia def. Venezuela 3-0, (25-21, 25-16, 25-19)
Estonia rolled through Venezuela in three sets with a 13-1 blocking advantage leading their success.
Robert Taht and Andrus Raadik each put down 13 points in the win while Venezuela’s Emerson Alexander Rodriguez Gonzalez contributed nine points in the loss.
Day Three
- Qatar def. Venezuela 3-1, (27-29, 25-16, 45-43, 25-13)
Qatar took down Venezuela in a high-scoring four-set match. The first set went to Venezuela with a 29-27 win, but Qatar fought back in the second to easily tie the match up a 1-1 with a 25-16 win. The third set is where all the action took place, with a nearly double the original ending point of a set. Qatar and Venezuela fought tooth and nail for the 45-43 third set win. The third set goes down as the highest international match set score ever. In the fourth set, Qatar came out strong, from the momentous third set win to dominate 25-13 for the win.
Despite an attack advantage of 72-57, Venezuela made 38 mistakes in the match, which caused their demise. Qatar’s strong block also played a factor, out-blocking Venezuela 21-9.
Qatar’s top scorer was Papemaguette Diagne with 18 points while Belal Abunabot added another 17. For Venezuela, Edson Alberto Valencia Gonzalez put down a match-best 19 points.
- Estonia def. Greece 3-2, (25-13, 21-25, 22-25, 25-17, 15-11)
Estonia took down Greece to cap off their 3-0 weekend. The Estonian side took the first set easily, but faltered in the next two, falling behind 1-2 in the match. They woke up in the third to tie the match a 2-2, coming out strong in the fifth set to take the match. The loss secured Greece’s last place finish in the World League with no wins.
The Estonian side dominated defensively at the net with 15 blocks to Greece’s two.
Robert Taht led the winning team with 19 points, while Ardo Kreek put down another 14 in the winn, with six of the points being blocks.
For Greece, Rafil Koumentakis put down 19 points, all on kills with Andreas-Dimitrios Fragkos adding another 15.

Day One
- Chinese Taipei def. Montenegro 3-1, (25-22, 25-21, 18-25, 25-17)
Chinese Taipei kicked off the second round with a four-set win over Montenegro, going up early 2-0 in the match. Hung-Min Liu led the winning side with 14 points while Montenegro’s Marko Bojic and Bozidar Cuk each put down 16 points in the losing effort.
- Kazakhstan def. Tunisia 3-1, (13-25, 30-28, 25-21, 25-21)
Kazakhstan started off their round 2 play with a bang, taking down Tunisia in four. The winning side started off slow but picked it up for a tough 30-28 second set win that gave them the momentum going forward.
Maxim Michshenko was on fire in the win with a match-best 27 points while Tunisia’s Hamza Nagga put down 22 points in the loss.
Day Two
- Montenegro def. Kazakhstan 3-0, (25-16, 25-17, 25-19)
Montenegro swept the Kazakhstan team in an easy match, with Kazakhstan never reaching 20 points in the match. A strong block and serve from Montenegro was instrumental in their success.
Aleksandar Minic led Montenegro with 16 points with Marko Bojic adding another 14. For the losing team, Alexandr Stolnikov put down 10 points.
- Tunisia def. Chinese Taipei 3-2, (25-23, 23-25, 25-17, 20-25, 15-12)
Tunisia battled through a back and forth match to take down Chinese Taipei in five sets. A strong block is what led to their victory, out-blocking Chinese Taipei 16-7.
Leading Tunisia was Hamza Nagga with a match-best 25 points, with Chinese Taipei’s Hung-Min Liu contributing 20 points in their loss.
Day Three
- Chinese Taipei def. Kazakhstan 3-1, (25-23, 17-25, 25-21, 25-21)
Chinese Taipei took down Kazakhstan in a four-set match with Chlen-Chen Chen leading the team with 17 points. For Kazakhstan, Maxim Michshenko contributed 17 points in the losing effort.
Chinese Taipei was down in almost every statistical category, but used 32 errors by Kazakhstan in their favor.
- Tunisia def. Montenegro 3-2, (25-20, 25-17, 23-25, 23-25, 15-7)
Tunisia took a tough five-set match from Montenegro with Hamza Nagga leading the way with 20 points, 14 of which were kills with a match-best six blocks.
For the losing squad Aleksandar Minic put down a match-best 24 points, all being kills.

Day One
- Spain def. Mexico 3-2, (23-25, 25-18, 21-25, 25-19, 15-9)
Spain fought through a five-set match with Mexico to take their first win in the second round of World League play.
Daniel Rocamora Blazquez led the team with 20 points while Sergio Noda Blanco added another 16 for Spain. For Mexico, Nestor Orellana led the way with 17 points.
- Austria def. Germany 3-1, (25-20, 27-29, 30-28, 25-23)
Austria took down Germany in a four-set match up, becoming the only team to take down the German squad in the World League.
Leading Austria was Alexander Berger with 25 points with Paul Buchegger adding another 17 to the winning side. For Germany, Simon Hirsch put down 23 points.
Day Two
- Germany def. Spain 3-0, (28-26, 25-15, 25-19)
The German team dominated their match over Spain after a tough first set. The Spaniard side had 31 errors as opposed to Germany’s 11, which was detrimental to their success.
Christian Fromm and Simon Hirsch led the German team with 13 points each, while Ruben Schott added another 12.
For Spain, Andres J. Villena put down a match-best 17 points but it was not enough to help the Spaniards win.
- Austria def. Mexico 3-2, (21-25, 25-20, 18-25, 25-22, 15-12)
Austria fought through a tough five-set match up to take down Mexico. The Austrian side dropped the first set but regained themselves to take the second, tying the match a one all. Mexico flew in to take the third and the 2-1 match lead but couldn’t hold on, with Austria forcing a fifth and deciding set. The final set was a hard-fought battle, but the Austrian squad was able to take down Mexico 15-12 for the match.
The Austrian side was led by Alexander Berger with 23 points, 18 of which were kills with four blocks and one aces. Paul Buchegger added another 15 kills in the win.
For Mexico, Jorge Barajas and Nestor Orellana each contributed 18 points in the loss.
Day Three
- Germany def. Mexico 3-0, (25-17, 25-22, 25-17)
Germany flew through Mexico in a three-set match. The German’s used a tough serve and big block to take down the Mexican squad.
Germany was led by Simon Hirsch with 13 points, 10 of which were kills and three blocks. For the losing side, Nestor Orellana put down a match-best 16 points, that was not enough to propel the Mexican team to victory.
- Spain def. Austria 3-0, (25-21, 25-19, 29-27)
Spain topped the Austria team in three sets to earn the second place rank in the pool.
Andres J. Villena led the Spaniard side with 20 points, while Sergio Noda Blanco added another 15 points in the victory.
For Austria, Alexander Berger put down 16 points with Paul Buchegger adding 12 points to the losing effort.
