American Setter Carli Lloyd Arrives In Brazil

After almost a month of speculations regarding the rumors of her signing with Brazil’s Hinode/Barueri, the soap opera is over, and Carli Lloyd has finally arrived in Brazil to be formally announced by the team  and has already participated in light workouts with the squad. Here is what coach José Roberto Guimarães had to say about the signing, according to Globo.com:

“Lloyd is an important reinforcement. She is a member of Team USA and will add value to our team. She is an experienced athlete, who has played in several countries, competed world-wide, at the Olympics and other great competitions. She has recently had a shoulder injury, but she’s doing well, having trained with other athletes in the United States. We are very happy that she has accepted to play for our team, and her experience will certainly help us a lot for the rest of the season.”

In her new club Lloyd, who was named the USA Volleyball Indoor Player of the Year, will be tasked with the objective of helping a Barueri squad who has under-performed all season due to many injuries to its key players – Katarzyna Skowronska and Thaisa Daher – as well as developing and mentoring, together with her experienced back up Ana Porto, the team’s young setters Naiane Rios and Francine Tomazoni. The team is currently in 6th place of Superliga’s standings with an 8-7 record.

With her signing in Brazil, Lloyd will follow into the footsteps of the last two starting Team USA’s setters besides herself: Alisha Glass played for Vôlei Futuro in the 2010-11 season, while Courtney Thompson played for Unilever in the 2015-16 season.

Prior to the beginning of the 2017-18 international club volleyball season, American setter Carli Lloyd opted out of her contract with Fenerbahce Istanbul in the Turkish Women’s League due to a shoulder injury, being replaced by Nootsara Tomkom. The injury required Lloyd to have surgery and spend three months away from the courts.
