2017-2018 BRAZILIAN MEN’S SUPERLIGA

After being overtaken from Superliga’s #1 spot on the standings by Sesc/RJ last week (with a game less to play), Sada/Cruzeiro bounced back with two wins that assured it its return to the top of the standings.

Although this is still new territory for Cruzeiro, as it hasn’t been challenged atop of Superliga for 4 seasons now, it is not yet ready to give up its dominance without a good fight. Gone are superb players William Arjona and Wallace de Souza, however, Cruzeiro is gritting and grinding its way to another the title on the backs of Cubans Yoandy Leal and Robertlandy Simon:

  • On 01/16 Sada/Cruzeiro beat Corinthians Guarulhos 3-0 (37/35 27/25 25/20) behind Yoandy Leal‘s 15 points on 12/17 (71%) hitting, including 2 blocks and 2 aces. Rodrigo Nascimento had 13 points in the losing effort. The game was sloppy, with both teams combining for 65 errors (Cruzeiro 32, Corinthians 33) in only 3 sets of play. • Sesc/Rj beat Corinthians/Guarulhos 3-1 (26/24 23/25 22/25 17/25) behind Renan Buiatti‘s 21 points. Rogerio Nogueira had 16 points in the losing effort. Sesc was able to come out with the win even though it commited 36 errors to Corinthians’ 26. Its trump card was that it outblocked Corinthians 13 to 7.
  • EMS Funvic/Taubaté beat Ponta Grossa/Caramuru 3-0 (25/19 25/19 27/25). Up until now, the competition’s website has not released the match’s stats.

Team of the Week: Cruzeiro

After having its throne taken away, Cruzeiro was quick to bounce back and reclaim Superliga’s first place. Although the team is not as dominant as it had been the last couple of years, when it won three straight FIVB Club WCH gold medals, Cruzeiro still deserves respect and is still a formidable foe to beat. If any team hopes to take home the title this year, it must be ready to do away with Cruzeiro‘s winning ways.

Player of the Week: Yoandy Leal

This week, Leal had 33 points on 7 sets played on 29/39 (74%) hitting. Those numbers are just too dominating for opposing teams to have a real chance against Cruzeiro. Don’t let his below average performance at the 2017 FIVB Club WCH fool you, Leal is still as every bit as elite as he has ever been.
