Brazil’s 2018 version of Big Brother will have as one of its participants a former professional volleyball player. Paula Barbosa, who is now 29 years old, played in Superliga’s 2008-09 season for Mackenzie backing up now famous libero Tássia Silva, who currently plays in powerhouse Nestlé Vôlei/Osasco.
In her career, Paula shared the courts with many famous player who still play in Superliga today, like national teamers Carol Silva, Mariana Costa and Pri Daroit. She retired very early, at only 21 years of age.
As a testament to Superliga’s financial disparity among teams, it is not uncommon for players in lower-tier clubs to retire very early into their career and look for more lucrative endeavors. An example of this is a player from that same Mackenzie roster that Paula was on: Mariana Costa, who today plays for Brazil’s national team and Osasco alongside Tássia, did not start her career well and also retired from volleyball in her early twenties to pursue modeling and acting, even posing for Brazil’s Playboy magazine. After two years, she returned to the courts, to everyone’s surprise, a much better player.

We have reported on various players who also left volleyball, if only for a little awhile, to pursue a career in show business. The latest examples are Michelle Gumabao (here) and Veronica Angeloni (here).
