2017-2018 BRAZILIAN WOMEN’S SUPERLIGA

Sesi‘s season has not gone as expected by the club. After making a beautiful State Championship run against very tough opponents like Osasco and Bauru, the team’s performance took a huge dip in Superliga. Originally thought to be a playoff squad, the team is now in last place. Sesi, who was once Superliga finalist only a few years ago, had to wait until the 18th round of competition to get its first season win. Below you’ll find info on all of the round’s games.

Team USA Watch

Sonja Newcombe recovered from her bad performances so far by putting up a decent 10 point performance on 9/19 hitting on Minas‘ loss to Uberlândia. She is still nowhere near Priscila Moreira‘s (Pri Daroit) level though, who coached Stefano Lazarini benched so Sonja could play. Destinee Hooker on the other hand, had a night to forget, as even though she led the team with 14 points, she did so on 12/41 (29%) hitting.

Meanwhile, Barueri hit 42% as a team under Carli Lloyd’s offensive command. The team is now 3-1 with her on the court.

Nicole Fawcett is still rehabbing her calf injury in Uberlândia. She is yet to play in 2018.

Team of the Week: Sesi

Once one of the premier Brazilian clubs, Sesi is now in its last legs. Its first win of the season came only this round, the 18th played, which means that Sesi now boasts an abysmal 1-17 record. Regardless, we would like to congratulate all these girls who in spite of the team’s horrible season, still found motivation to go out there and fight for a win against a much tougher opponent. At least they will be able to boast that the team didn’t go win-less throughout the whole competition, which would just add insult to injury.

Player of the Week: Tandara Caixeta

Tandara took matters into her own hands in her match-up against Tifanny Abreu, who just last round broke her Superliga single game scoring record, and erupted for a 31 point performance on a monster on 28/50 (56%) hitting display. Tandara, a Brazilian national teamer, is one of the best hitters in the world. There is no way Osasco could’ve made out of this game with the win if it wasn’t for her skill and attitude.
