After 10 months away from the court due to a gruesome injury, which included an arduous recovery period, Brazil’s superstar middle-blocker Thaisa Daher finally returned to the hardwoood to make her long awaited debut for José Roberto Guimarães‘ Hinode/Barueri in its match against Vôlei/Bauru. Thaisa started the game and played the first two sets, later being subbed out by her coach.
Her debut was very timid, as she is still very far away from her ideal playing form. She scored only two points, an ace and a block, having also attempted four attacks, but with no success. Bauru’s setter Juma Fernandes did not offer any kind of breaks to Thaisa, as she basically played 100% of her sets as far away from Thaisa as possible in all possession both players were pitted against each other.
Here is what both Thaisa and José Roberto Guimarães had to say of the debut:
“I am overjoyed to be back. In the first set I was anxious, wanting to score at all costs, but then I got used to it on the court. In the second set I thought I was better on the court.” – Thaisa
“We were scheduled to play two sets and that’s what we did. It was an important match for her to get the rhythm of the game, aiming at the quarterfinals.” – Guimarães.
Barueri secured the 3-2 (20/25 25/22 15/25 25/19 15/13) win after a very tough battle. Katarzyna Skowronska led the way with 25 points on 25/41 (61%) hitting, while Tifanny Abreu had another monster performance with 36 points on 33/53 (62%) hitting. This was the first time in the season that all 4 of Barueri‘s superstars, Jaqueline Endres, Carli Lloyd, Kazarzyna Skowronska, and Thaisa Daher, started a game for the team. With these names on the court playing at the same time, it is safe to assume that if all players are healthy and at their best, Barueri will offer a lot of of trouble to Superliga’s elite teams.
“Look who will be ready to make her on-court debut today: Thaisa, two-times Olympic Champion.”
