2017-2018 BRAZILIAN WOMEN’S SUPERLIGA

In this weekend’s shortened round, Fluminense locked Superliga’s 6th seed by beating Pinheiros 3-0 (25/15 25/22 25/21) behind Thais Souza’s 23 points. Mari Cassemiro had 8 points in the losing effort. Fluminense held Pinheiros to 31% hitting.

Why is the 6th seed noteworthy? Because this means that the team has successfully ducked the competition’s 2 best teams and heavy title favorites Sesc and Uberlândia in the forthcoming playoffs.

Team USA Watch

In what happens to be a big coincidence, no USA players performed in this round, as Carly Lloyd’s Barueri had already played its match against Destinee Hooker‘s and Sonja Newcombe‘s Minas earlier in the season, and Nicole Fawcett‘s Uberlândia will only play next week.

Recaps

  • Vôlei Bauru beat Renata Country/Valinhos 3-0 (13/25 19/25 11/25) behind Yoana Palacio’s 17 points on 16/24 (67%) hitting. Vivian Rodrigues had 10 points in the losing effort. Bauru hit 50% as a team, while Valinhos was held to only 30%.

  • Fluminense beat Pinheiros 3-0 (25/15 25/22 25/21) behind Thais Souza’s 23 points. Mari Cassemiro had 8 points in the losing effort. Fluminense held Pinheiros to 31% hitting.
  • Note: Camponesa/Minas and Hinode/Barueri played this round’s match on 01/23. Minas won the contest 3-0 (19/25 23/25 22/25) behind Caroline Gattaz’s 17 points, while Edinara Brancher had 16 points in the losing effort.
  • Note: Sesc/RJ and Dentil Praia Clube/Uberlândia are scheduled to play on 02/27.

Team of the Week: Fluminense

Fluminense locked Superliga’s 6th seed by holding Pinheiros to a 31% hitting night. This means that it has managed to duck either Uberlândia or Sesc in the quarterfinals of the competition, and will instead face either Osasco or Minas, easier opponents against which Fluminense has a real chance of coming out with a victory.

Player of the Week: Yoana Palacio

After Tifanny Abreu debuted with Bauru‘s colors, breaking offensive records left and right, Cuban Yoana Palacio was relegated to a lesser role on offense. This doesn’t mean, though, that she stopped being the offensive juggernaut she always has been throughout her career. This week she reminded fans of this, by torching Valinhos  for 17 points on 16/24 (67%) hitting in three quick sets.
