Superliga’s top seeded teams did not disappoint in their first leg matches of the competition’s quarterfinals, all of them bringing home wins. American players had decisive performances in all of their games. Below you’ll find results and reactions from all matches. At the end of the article, we’ll post social media moments from all American players currently participating in Superliga’s playoffs.
- Dentil Praia Clube/Uberlândia beat Vôlei Bauru 3-1 (25/27 25/21 15/25 20/25) behind Nicole Fawcett‘s 17 points. Tifanny Abreu had 24 points in the losing effort. Here is coach Paulo Coco’s post match reactions:
“It was an important victory, mostly because we were able to catch up on the score when we fell behind. It was a good start for our playoffs. But nothing is won yet. A team that has Tiffany and Palacio, both who score a lot, is very dangerous at any time. We have to keep ourselves ground, we will have a very strong tough week of training ahead of us, and the most important thing now is to keep our efforts consistent, specially in our defensive game. Our side outs worked at times, in others it was erratic. But we managed to minimize their attack power.”
- Sesc/RJ went all out against Pinheiros to win 3-2 (19/25 25/21 18/25 25/22 18/20) behind Yonkaira Peña’s 28 points. Bruna Honório had 25 points in the losing effort. Peña was ecstatic after her effort:
“I attacked a lot. I have the power for that. I’m very “hot” in the game, I have a strong arm, so they set the ball to me. I can put the ball on the floor easily. I’m a decisive player. Any time I can put the ball on the opponent’s floor. But there is always something to improve and grow on. Playing with with Bernardinho is very good. He’s a wonderful coach. I have much to learn from him. It’s been a wonderful time for me, the best of my life. I’ve learned a lot. I have improved a lot in my service, passing and defense.”
- Camponesa/Minas beat Fluminense 3-0 (19/25 23/25 21/25) in the most lopsided game of the round Destinee Hooker‘s 16 points. Sonja Newcombe helped with 8 points and decisive defensive actions, taking home math MVP honors. Arianne Tolentino had 20 points in the losing effort. Newcombe talked to the media after the game:
“I’m taking advantage of this great moment, I really love being here, I love this team and I’m very happy. We’re training heavy, but we know it’s one step at a time. I hope it will work out for our team.”
- In another tightly contested game Vôlei Nestlé beat Hinode/Barueri 3-1 (25/23 28/30 28/26 25/17) behind Tandara Caixeta‘s 30 points. Katarzyna Skowronska had 15 points in the losing effort. Carli Lloyd helped with 6 points, including 4 blocks, but the team only hit 30% with her on command. Even though she had an amazing performance, Tandara was not 100% satisfied with her play:
“My performance is still a little below from what it needs to be for me to become a more decisive player in every game. In some moments, I do not know if because excitement, I lacked the discernment to figure out my hits. I had five or six match points before closing the game and it is in these moments that I need to have the effort of thinking and playing at the same time. I can not let myself down because I’m going to get a lot of balls set my way. If I lower my head, I’m out of the game. You must have a cool head.”
