Dentil Praia Clube/Uberlândia won its first Superliga title by beating SESC/RJ 4-0 (Golden Set- 25/19 25/23 25/17 25/18) behind Fernanda Garay‘s 21 points. She was helped by Nicole Fawcett, who chipped in 19 points on 36% hitting. Drussyla Costa had 15 points in the losing effort. Praia hit 44% from the field as a team, while holding SESC to a 32% effort.
With the title, Praia prevented SESC of winning its 6th straight Superliga trophy. Coach Paulo Coco and team captain Walewska Menezes reacted to the feat:
“To beat SESC in the finals, the most storied Superliga franchise ever, coached by one of the best coaches in the world, was sensational. This is a testament to our efforts during the whole year. Our team had a winning mentality, I can only feel sorry for those who said we weren’t going to win anything, we proved them very wrong.”
“We had to be very strong to finally break Sesc‘s hegemony after so many years, specially after losing the first game. This team is very strong, and we showed that throughout the whole playoffs. The title crowns all of Praia’s efforts, which was a long-term project.”
Sesc‘s Gabriela Guimarães commented on the loss:
“First, I’d like to congratulate Praia, who played very well, very different from what they performed in the first game. Our team was not able to take advantage of some opportunities, be it in in the game or in the Golden Set. We had a lot of difficulty in scoring the ball, our middle blockers were not able to perform. We are very sad, because we knew we could’ve played better. Praia had a superb season and deserved the title.”
Praia’s setter Claudia Bueno was chosen as the Final’s MVP, while Osasco’s Tandara Caixeta took home Tournament MVP honors. The pleasure of scoring the championship point was Fawcett’s:
