Tifanny Abreu made volleyball history when she became the first trans female to play in Brazil’s Superliga. Since then, she broke the competition’s single game scoring record, and has dominated the league’s offensive statistics. Such performances has drawn the ire of many teams, players, and fans, who have asked the Brazilian Volleyball Federation (CBV) to find a “solution” to the situation. Although CBV has not yet taken any action on the matter, as it will probably wait for FIVB’s future decisions, clubs have taken action by agreeing to tag Tifanny with a maximum score in Superliga’s parity system for next season, one of only two players who are not Olympic gold medalists, but yet were singled out with the distinction (the other being Gabriela Guimarães).

However, this week Tifanny saw her dream of playing for Brazil’s NT come a little bit closer, as the executive director of the Brazilian Volleyball Federation (CBV), Radamés Lattari, one of Brazilian volleyball biggest personalities and authorities, stated in an interview that he sees her possible call up as something “totally natural and acceptable”:

“I think the following, we all have the right to an opinion, but we also all have to comply with the law. The law says that if Tifanny, or any trans player, presents blood-work results consistent with IOC regulations, they can play. She did. CBV has a medical committee who analyzed the documents and examinations of the athlete, and she is within the law, of the required parameters. So at the moment, we will keep with what the IOC has established. We can not prohibit or allow anything, we must follow the law.”

Judging by her performance in the competition, she would definetely help Brazil’s NT in its 2018 goals, which includes the FIVB World Championships. But what kind of responde would her participation draw from teams around the globe? Judging from what we have seen in Superliga, we can expect controversy.
