Dentil Praia Clube/Uberlândia‘s better regular season record did not mean a thing in Game 1 of Superliga’s finals as Sesc/RJ opened up the series with a commanding 3-1 (26/24 25/19 22/25 25/17) victory behind Gabriela Guimarães’s and Drussyla Costa‘s 19 points each. Nicole Fawcett had 20 points in the losing effort. Sesc ou-tblocked Uberlândia 15 to 10 in the match, while 9 less errors.
Drussyla Costa was awarded the match’s MVP trophy. Here is how she reacted to it:
“The team contributed so much for my good performance. Roberta Ratzke distributed the balls very well, our team had a lot of volume and our defensive system was very good. Fabiana Alvim knows how to motivate me, and that gives me and all other girls an edge. I try to learn a lot with our more experienced players and the entire team’s staff. I wanted to help the team in the best way and only won this trophy because the whole group had a great match. We must now focus on having a good game on Sunday, that’s all. But I hope we win and make a big game. We have to prepare a lot this week and pump ourselves up. There is no way we can slow down now. It’s time to keep our focus and train for us to achieve our ultimate next week.”
Fabiana Claudino, who captained Brazil to two Olympic gold medals, commented her team’s loss:
“I think our team did not pressure SESC at all. They scored superbly and we stopped as the team. We did not set our pace and did not play tactically. So, thank God, we have one more game at home. We have to study and do our best. I speak for myself, nobody did their best game. We have to improve a lot still for this last match.”
Game 2 will be this Sunday, with Uberlândia needing to win the game in order to take the series into the Golden Set decider.
