2017-2018 BRAZILIAN WOMEN’S SUPERLIGA

Superliga’s coaches dancing chair continues to shake up the Brazilian volleyball market. This week, it was Pinheiro’s turn to announce Brasília‘s Sérgio Negrão as the team’ new head coach, according to Melhordovolei.com.br. Negrão is very experienced, having coached legendary team Leite Moça to three Superliga and one World title in the early 90’s, a team where most of Brazil’s best volleyball players in history consolidated their careers. Since then, he has spent his time back in forth in managing roles and ocasional coaching jobs.

His last stint in Brasília had mixed results. As a general manager, he led the team went to the playoffs several times. However, the last two seasons were very rough financially for the club. The last season had the club in such dire straits, that Negrão himself had to step down from his front office job and assume the head coach position, most probably due to lack of funding to hire a coach. He led the team, which had the smallest budget of the competition, to a 10th place finish, which was enough to avoid relegation. This impressive feat was what probably earned him the new gig in Pinheiros, a medium market team with better budget pretensions.

As for Pinheiro’s former coach, Paulo de Tarso, the media speculates that he will assume an assistant position with the club. The fact that he was demoted to a lesser role strengthens rumors that he is being penalized for his rude behavior towards his players during the season:
